a few weeks ago we left ollie with my folks. we flew to new york to attend all tomorrows parties and see our dear friends. we'd both left ollie before, but never together.
we left on a wednesday night, on a red-eye so we were able to put ollie to bed and, as far as he knew, we'd only be gone for 4 nights.
before we put him to bed, the three of us read books on our bed, like we do every night. i cried. i told gabe, if we didn't have plane tickets i probably wouldn't be going. after we put him to bed, i was a blubbering mess.
on the way to the airport, i called my mother, who would be picking up ollie the next day (a babysitter was spending the night at our house that first night).
through tears, i gave her instructions, such as:
don't leave him in the car in hot weather. don't leave him in the car, period.
if you bring him swimming, you aren't to leave him alone for one second. she asked if my aunt could watch him in the pool, in case, say, she had to pee. i told her to pee in the pool. no one, NO ONE, was to be with him by the pool but her.
if you feed him grapes, they must be cut into 4 pieces. but he doesn't like grapes, i lied, so i wouldn't give him ANY grapes if i were her. or raisins. they're a choking hazard until the age of three i cautioned her. and he really doesn't like them, i lied.
and so on. it's a good thing that my mom has an excellent sense of humor. she thought my paranoia was quite a hoot.
by the time we got on the plane i was doing much better. of course, the beer i pounded at the airport (gabe made me!) probably helped me calm down.
we were gone a touch too long, but i was able to enjoy the trip. yay for overnights with the grandparents!

breakfast
i'm a creature of habit or maybe plain lazy because i eat the same thing for breakfast six out of seven days each week: a piece of whole grain toast with butter, an apple, pear or banana and a cappuccino.
jennifer causey, however, eats a variety of lovely, healthy things for breakfast every day. her blog, simply breakfast, is so inspiring and pretty.
she also has a fantastic collection of linens.

herb and dorothy
i want to check this out:
Herb and Dorothy is a documentary about Herb and Dorothy Vogel, who built one of the most significant contemporary art collections ever. Herb's salary, as a postal worker, went towards their art purchases and they used Dorothy's salary, as a librarian, to live.
Their criteria for purchasing art were: they had to be able to afford it and it had to fit in their small Manhatten apartment.
Their collection grew to over 4,000 pieces and it got so big, they finally had to start storing it under their bed! In 1992, they donated their collection to the National Gallery.
via the lovely and talented Shauna, who writes small medium large, which i read daily.

both my boys are sleeping. i'm beat after hosting a brunch today. i'm combing through apartment therapy, looking for house ideas. two i like from rachel and alfred's artfully cataloged collections, are:
these leaves are above their bed and they look so pretty. i don't think i could talk gabe into this, however, i could maybe mount them and frame them.
i first saw this done by lisa congdon. i've been collecting plates ever since, however, i've yet to hang anything. maybe in our new place.
both images from apartment therapy.

exploring kutsher's
instead of
instead of telling you more about atp, i'm going to tell you what i did tonight.
tonight, instead of exercising for the first time in a week, i made this chocolate cake, from here.
it's the 2nd time i've made it, after reading about it on not martha.
so now i'm sitting on the couch feeling very full and happy. and a little bad about not exercising.
smitten kitchen is new favorite. check out the grape focaccia with rosemary. i think it's next on my list.

back from vacation
we left ollie for the first time this past weekend and went to ATP with our friends, gabrielle and craig.
we stayed at kutsher's country club. gabrielle called it indie rock summer camp, which was a perfectly apt description.
there was lots and lots of music, comedy, movies, food, drinking, laughing, and dancing. more pictures and details to follow.
