herb and dorothy
i want to check this out:
Herb and Dorothy is a documentary about Herb and Dorothy Vogel, who built one of the most significant contemporary art collections ever. Herb's salary, as a postal worker, went towards their art purchases and they used Dorothy's salary, as a librarian, to live.
Their criteria for purchasing art were: they had to be able to afford it and it had to fit in their small Manhatten apartment.
Their collection grew to over 4,000 pieces and it got so big, they finally had to start storing it under their bed! In 1992, they donated their collection to the National Gallery.
via the lovely and talented Shauna, who writes small medium large, which i read daily.

1. it's been raining a fair amount here lately and suddenly my knee has started to get stiff before it rains. it's tight right now and i just checked the weather. yep, i knew it -- rain tomorrow night. does this mean i have arthritis? (and, i'd like to venture a guess that weather.com is wrong and it will rain before tomorrow night. i'm just sayin.')
from christine buckton tillman. i love everything she does. check out her flickr. her drawing collection is amazing.
3. this valentine is good
available here.
4. i'd like to check this out. save the deli, berkeley edition.

fashion blog: kansas couture
kansas couture is a new(ish) add to my feed. katy is darling.
lately i've felt like i've been in quite the fashion rut. i feel like i have no style at all. and, when it comes to work, i'm even more discouraged.
kansas couture has some good inspiration -- for work, too.

obsessed
i'm kind of obsessed with fentiman's sodas lately.

jeff introduced them to me one day at work about a month ago. he let me try them all.
the shandy is my favorite. it has 70% beer and natural lemon juice. i could drink them all day. (they're only .5% alcohol.)
g thinks that they're gross but i want to try making a real shandy at home sometime.
they're all really good. the seville orange and the ginger beer are two other favorites.

more ways to waste time linked to brandi strickland's art prints and originals today and i'm smitten.

i want one to hang near the ian johnson print i got for gabe for christmas.
funny story about the ian johnson print. gabe and i were at park life on clement while the ian johnson exhibition was up. gabe loved everything.
a while later, right before christmas i ended up in park life by myself. i noticed they were selling limited edition ian johnson prints. actually, there was one ian johnson print for sale. except i didn't know that the artist's name was ian johnson. i thought the person in picture was ian johnson. i bought it for gabe.

i'm the kind of person who has a terrible time keeping a surprise. especially from gabe.
once i got home i called him and asked him if he liked ian johnson. and he said, "yeah. that's the guy who did all that great stuff at park life. why do you ask?"
"uhhhh, no reason," i said.
then i looked through the ian johnson book we'd picked up and found out that the person in the picture was ornette coleman.
and once again, gabe's present was not a surprise.

margin detail
i follow this guy, chris piascik's flickr page. he does daily drawings with tons of hand-drawn lettering.
he's part of a group, called margin detail, that's totally devoted to doodles.
you can leave them a note describing what you think defines a doodle.
Margin Detail is a collection of unrefined doodles by working illustrators and designers including Eric Ellis, Chad Kouri, Jesse Hora, Chris Piascik and Kate Bingaman-Burt as well as other guest contributors. The only problem is… we can’t come to a decision on what defines a doodle! Does it have to be done quickly? Only use one drawing utensil? small? crappy?! All of the above? We just don’t know. So, help us out! What do you think a doodle is? Leave your definition below while we fumble our way through finishing the rest of the site for our launch on MARCH 28th. Enjoy!

Headband
Shauna from small medium large made an adorable headband yesterday. I want one.

She's been home sick and she apologizes for the picture; I think she looks pretty!

Roadside Love
My Google Reader has more blog posts than I will ever be able to read. I have over 1,000 unread food blog posts right now. I have over a 1,000 unread celebrity gossip blog posts right now. But I like that. I always have something to read. And with my iPhone, I can pretty much read all the time: in the car, while I'm nursing, waiting in line at the store, etc.
One blog that I always seem to be up to date on, is Roadside Projects Blog. I don't remember how I stumbled across this one but Jayme McGowan's 3D illustrations are amazing.
She makes cards:
She makes pictures:
She does portraits:
She does pocket theater pop-ups:
I would be fun to commission a family portrait one of these days.
